Introduction:
A visit to Fall River can be a visit to a living museum.
There is the Marine Museum and the Historical Society with an
exhibit about Lizzie Borden and the world famous ax murders in
1892. Ethnic restaurants and bakeries, as well as a factory
outlet stores for bargain purchases, are all to be explored.
The most popular tourist attraction of all is Battleship
Cove, located on the eastern shore of the Taunton River just
above the Braga fixed bridge. see the largest collection
of U.S. Navy vessels open to the public in one location. Visit
the 'Big Mamie' battleship Massachusetts; the destroyer Kennedy;
the submarine Lionfish; a landing craft; and PT 765. Just south
of the bridge is the Marine Museum containing a fascinating
collection of ship models and memorabilia from the days of the
old Fall River Day Line including a 12 foot model of the replica
of the Mutiny on the Bounty.
Navigating the Water:
Enter Mount hope Bay from the East Passage of Narragansett
Bay. Work your way between Hog Island to the northwest and
Arnold Point to the southeast. You pass FL G 4s Bell G '3' to
either side. North of this buoy, Hog Island has notable shoaling
on its south side, so keep south of Iso 6s 54ft 12 M Horn.
Beyond Fl 'G' 4s BELL '3' and the shoal light, head northeast
for Mount Hope Bay Bridge. Keep north of GONG R '6' and FL R 6s
6M "6A', then continue beneath the center span, which has a
vertical clearance of 135 feet (mlw). Currents can be difficult
here, but the channel is deep, wide, and well marked. About 1.5
nm northeast of the bridge, the channel branches at Fl(2+1) R 6s
GONG RG "MH" south of Mount Hope Point. The main channel
continues northeast to the Taunton River, while the other leads
east, then south into Sakonnet river. Watch out for Spar Island,
marked to its west by R N '2', around Mount Hope Bay. The island
often isn't visible even at low tide.
This is not intended to replace diligent
proper navigational procedures.
ACTIVITIES:
Visit Battleship Cove and its main feature, the USS
Massachusetts. Nearby Heritage State Park provides space for
picnicking. The park offers concerts, exhibits and shows. Next
to the park, the Maritime Museum chronicles the history of the
