From the Commodore: be safe in advance of Hurricane Earl By now you all should be aware that Hurricane Earl could potentially come our way by this Friday. Although the final path is still uncertain, the BYC waterfront has to begin preparations now to protect the yacht club's assets from storm damage. This includes the potential removal of the dingy docks and tie-ups. There are nearly 50 boats tied up to our docks and two lifts; thus the need to plan ahead. It is the responsibility of the boat owners to remove their boats in a timely manner. The BYC will not assume any responsibility for any boats left on the docks. Also everyone should secure any boats that are on moorings ahead of time and not wait until the weather has already turned bad, as the waterfront will make the final decision when to shut down services when the safety of the launch drivers and launches are in doubt. Let's hope the storm passes us by, but please help the waterfront out by removing your boat. We will do the best to store your boat in the back of the parking lot once it is on a trailer. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. From Phil DiCarlo, BYC Commodore |

M.A.R.E.: It's that time of year again and it is coming up quickly! The dates and the three events supporting the BYC charity of choice, M.A.R.E. (Mass Adoption Resource Exchange), are as follows: Mon Sept 6 (Labor Day) - BYC Pursuit Sailboat Race; Sat Sept 11 - The Stoddard Fishing Tournament; and, Mon Sept 13 - Golf Tournament at Beverly Golf and Tennis. The BYC can use your help with these events. We have auctions and raffles for the sailing and golf and we need items large and small. If there is anything you can donate, or know someone with a local business that can donate, we would be very grateful. We also need volunteers on Labor Day, Mon Sept 6 for the Pursuit Sailboat Race, as well as Mon Sept 13 for the golf tournament in Beverly. And we want you at the auctions. We also have advertising opportunities in the form of signs on the golf course. Or, you can make a simple donation. We can now accept your donation on your BYC number. We also are looking for your sailboat entries, fisherman and golfers. Donations from BYC members in the past have included sailboat or power boat day charters, rounds of golf, art, handmade goods including jewelry, art, clothing, and many other items large and small. We also need to sell raffle tickets for the two separate raffles. The only way this can be successful on behalf of M.A.R.E if our membership helps in this endeavor. Any donation- goods, time etc. -will be greatly appreciated. You can find details on the BYC website. http://www.bostonyachtclub.net/social/charities. Please email me if you can help. And thanks in advance! M.A.R.E tax exempt # 042-227431. From Dana Williams, Chair, BYC Charities |

News Flash: Stoddard Fishing Tournament goes International! The Stoddard Fishing Tournament (to be held Sat Sept 11) was named for two brothers and long-time BYC members, Dr. Warren and Dr. Eben Stoddard. They were avid fishermen and made generous donations to the BYC. The upcoming BYC Tournament’s fame has reached far and wide. Mr. Robert “Soapy” Stoddard will be fishing on the ELIZABETH M for this year’s event. Soapy is well known to many BYC members because of his long-time involvement with the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race. Soapy is coming down to the event to watch out for the “family interests,” as it seems that the good Doctors Stoddard are really transplanted Canadians. The balance of the Stoddard Clan still resides in Nova Scotia and have pooled their resources to pay for Soapy to come down and defend the family name and honor! Attending with Soapy will be the famous Past Commodore George Chisholm, also of RNSYS and Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Racing fame. From Dana Williams, Chair, BYC Charities |
