Sailing Instructions
Sonar Frostbite Series
1.
Rules. Racing will be governed by the 2005-2008
Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the rules of the Sonar Class Association, the
Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions.
2.
Entries. This event is open to any Sonar on submission
of the completed Waiver/Entry form and payment of the applicable fee. Each
Sonar will be dry sailed from the premises of the Boston Yacht Club.
3.
Advertising. This series are designated
as a Category A event.
4.
Notices
to Competitors. Notices
to competitors will be posted on the official board at the Boston Yacht Club
pierhead.
5.
Changes to Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions. Any changes to this Notice of Race and
Sailing Instructions will be posted before 1800 hours on the Sunday before it
is to take effect.
6.
Signals Made Ashore. Signals made ashore will be
displayed from the yard arm of the Boston Yacht Club.
7.
Schedule of Races. The schedule of races is
given below
7.1 All races are scheduled to start at 1200 hours. The warning signal will be made 3 minutes before the start.

7.1.1 On March 19, a ‘Smackdown format’ team racing one day regatta will be held. A separate set of Sailing Instructions will be published by March 12 for this event.
7.2 Multiple races may be sailed immediately after the first race.
7.3 Any registered boat that, in the opinion of the Race Committee, is not participating shall be removed from the premises at the discretion of the Race Committee.
8.
Racing Area. All races will be conducted
inside
9.
Safety. Life jackets or other personal buoyancy
shall be worn by all personnel while on the BYC floats and by all competitors
while sailing. Wet suits and dry suits are not adequate personal buoyancy. This
replaces Rule 40.
10. Courses.
10.1 All courses will be windward leeward, with
the exception of team racing, which will be a modified windward leeward
(starting and finishing to windward).
10.2 Code flag “T” (red, white and blue) flown no
later than the warning signal means “Sail the course twice around”.
11. Marks. Marks will be brightly colored tetrahedrons and the mooring buoy
to which they are attached.
12. Spinnakers and Whisker poles. The use of spinnakers will be at the
discretion of the Race Committee. An on-water announcement will be made if
spinnakers may be used in a particular race. Whisker poles are not allowed at
any time while racing.
13. The Start.
13.1 The starting sequence will in accordance with Appendix Q of the RRS.
13.2 Course and postponement signals may be made orally.
13.3 Audible signals will govern, even when supplemental signals are also used. Rule 26 does not apply.
13.4 Signals will be timed from their commencement.
13.5 A series of short signals may be made before the sequence begins to attract attention.
13.6 Failure of a competitor to hear a course, postponement, starting or recall signal shall not be grounds for redress.
14. Change of Course After Start. When changing the course after the start,
the Race Committee will lay a new mark and notify competitors prior to the
first boat rounding the prior mark.
15. Shortened Course. The Race Committee may shorten the course
for any reason. (Changes RRS 32).
16. Penalties. A boat that may have broken a rule of Part
2 while racing may take a penalty at the time of the incident. Her penalty
shall be a 360˚ Turns Penalty. (Changes RRS 44.1 and 44.2) The Scoring Penalty described in RRS 44.3 will
not be applicable for these races.
17. Protests.
17.1 Protests shall be in accordance with RRS 61 and the following.
17.2 Protests shall be written on forms available at the Boston Yacht Club and be delivered there within 30 minutes after the docking time of the Race Committee signal boat.
17.4 Protest hearings will begin as soon as all parties to the protest are ashore, but no later than 1630 hours on the day of the race in which the protest occurs. This constitutes notice as required by RRS 63.2.
18. Scoring.
18.1 Each boat starting and finishing and not thereafter retiring, being penalized or given redress will be scored points in accordance with The Low Point Scoring System rule A4.1, except that the score for first place will be ľ points.
18.2 Boats failing to finish within ten (10) minutes of the first boat to finish will be scored points equal to the average points that would have been awarded to all boats failing to finish had all such boats finished.
18.3 All other boats will be scored as follows (modifies RRS A4.2):

18.4 A boats series score will be the sum of her scores for all races in that series.
19. Prizes.
19.1 A daily prize will be awarded for the boat with the best overall score for each Sunday.
19.2 A series prize will be awarded to the boat finishing first providing the average number of starters for all races is three or more. A second place series prizes will be awarded if the average number of starters for all races completed for is five or more, and a third place series prize if the average number of starters for all races is seven or more
19.3 Special prizes will be awarded for the following:
A. The combined total for the second race date of each series (November 20, January 15, and February 19) will be used to determine the winner of the Bud Bowl (winner receives a 30 pack of Budweiser).
B. The combined total of the fourth race date of each series (December 11, January 29, and March 5) will be used to determine the winner of the Gosling’s Cup (winner receives a 1.75L bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal rum).
19.4 Season championship prizes will be awarded on the basis of the sum of the final scores for the three series and scoring in the team racing event held on March 19.
