The Beringer Bowl is an overnight race beginning in Marblehead
on Friday and ending in Provincetown on Saturday, with
festivities Saturday into Sunday morning. The race has changed
over the years, as originally this race began in Marblehead,
boats would sail around Massachusetts Bay all night and finish
back in Marblehead sometime the next day. Many would then run
off and sleep!
1999 brought a format change to a destination race with a
relatively short distance 40 to 45 miles to Provincetown. This
is the perfect race for those who are new to night racing, with
a short distance, a simple straight run to the finish, and a
race time of usually 6 to 10 hours to complete. This has proved
an attractive combination for the cruising classes whose
participation keeps growing. 2006 added a noon start for the "OCS"
Division to complement the historical evening start for all
other racing classes.
On arrival in Provincetown, the harbor offers plenty of
moorings, launch service and on shore facilities and we have a
tent set up on the beach at the Provincetown Inn overlooking the
harbor. Saturday afternoon, once the racers and guests have
found time for a nap or toured the town, come to the bash on the
beach with a barbeque, the awards, and of course a
great band until 21:30 hrs with lots of your favorite beverages.
