BYC M.A.R.E. - Chowder
Challenge Regatta
Hobie 16 wins the regatta against the big PHRF boats
(Marblehead, MA - Sept 6) 18 knots, steady rollers, shifty winds
while JB and Tucker Braun lined up for the start on their Hobie
16, along with 32 PHRF racing and cruising boats including
J-boats, Frers, Beneteau and a Kerr-55 for the M.A.R.E –
Chowder Challenge Pursuit Regatta hosted by the Boston YC on
Labor Day. Guess what – the Hobie won their class and the
regatta! Father and son were thrilled, a downwind start in 18
knots propelled them through the 6 nm course. The bigger boats
simply could not catch the Hobie on this ocean race. But best of
all, the racers and crew enjoyed the post race chowder, hot dogs
& stories while raising nearly $6000 for kids at the
Massachusetts Adoption Resource Agency (M.A.R.E.)– both racing
and cruising classes were won by families with kids, and the
overall by a father and son team. Now that is what a fun-filled
family racing day is all about – results are here

TO BYC MEMBERS
Donations for MARE can
now be made through the Club by
putting a donation on your number. |
The Charity Regatta stands as a tribute to its founder, our late
member Charles Quigley, Jr. Charlie served two loves when
starting this race program - his love of sailboat racing and his
devoted support of children in need. All proceeds from this
event go to the Massachusetts
Adoption Resource Exchange and, over the years, our racers
have helped make a big difference for needy kids.
If supporting this excellent program weren't
enough, the race itself is a lot of fun. Run as a pursuit race
with classes for both racers and cruisers, the race is followed
by a chowder party at the club where awards are presented for
the top five finishers in each class. There are few better ways
to finish the racing season!
