Event Sailing Instructions

Entry fees for this regatta are automatically covered by
entry into the full season of the Boston Yacht Club
Wednesday Evening Races. See paragraph 4 below.
1. Introduction: It is planned to run two relatively
short PHRF handicap races using Government marks in the
proximity of Marblehead Harbor and Salem Bay. This race is a
qualifier for the PHRF Marblehead Championship Trophy.
2. Check-in Before the Start: All boats must check-in
with the Race Committee using VHF channel 72 before the first
Warning Signal of the day.
3. Rules: The Mass Bay Sailing Association Notice of Race
and General Sailing Instructions (GSI) will govern the regatta,
except as any of these are changed by the Sailing Instructions (ESI).
4. Entries: Entries should be submitted before 1800
hrs on October 3, together with the appropriate fee and current
PHRF NE rating certificate to: BYC Race Committee, 1 Front
Street, Marblehead, MA. 01945. (Contact Geoff Smith 508
358-7542). Boats registered in the BYC Wednesday Evening
Series and entering this race shall register their intention and
division by email to: gesmith1000@comcast.net
Fees: $50 less discounts of $5 for USSA members and $5
for MBSA members.
Fees are not required for boats registered for the full
Wednesday Evening Series
5. Notice to Competitors: Notices to competitors
will be posted on the official notice board located near the
front desk. The scratch list will be posted on the official
notice board at 0830 hrs on Saturday, October 4.
6. Changes to Sailing Instructions: Any change to
the sailing instructions will be posted before 0830 hrs on the
day it is to take effect, except that any change to the schedule
of races will be posted by 2100 hrs on the day before it will
take effect.
7. Signals Made Ashore: Signals made ashore will be
displayed from the yardarm of the BYC flagstaff.
8. Schedule of Races:. Two races are scheduled. The
Warning Signal for the first race will be made at 1100hrs.
The second race will start after the finish of the first
race.
9. Class Flags: MBSA class splits shall be used.
All entries shall fly the appropriate class flag from their
backstay.
10. Racing Area: The starting area will be in the
vicinity of Marblehead Channel Bell Buoy, Mark "5" of the Mass
Bay Handbook List B, unless the Race Committee Signal Boat "Carl
Alberg" displays Code Flag "L" and proceeds elsewhere.
12. Marks: As identified in MBSA List A and List
B. Portable marks will be orange tetrahedrons.
13. The Start: Races will be started in accordance with
Paragraph 14 of the GSI. The time interval between the start of
one class and the warning signal for the subsequent class will
be at least one minute. Any class with less than three entries
may be combined with another class for a combined start. Classes
will be scored independently.
14. Recalls: Recalls will be in accordance with
RRS 29. The Race Committee will attempt to hail OCS boats on VHF
channel 72. Failure to hail, hail of some but not all, or
untimely hail of OCS starters shall not be grounds for redress
(changes RRS 62.1(a)).
15. Time Limit: Two hours after the start of each
class in the first race and one and one half hours for the
second race. The Race Committee may extend the time limit, and
will make such announcement VHF channel 72.
16. Scoring: The Low Point scoring system, RRS
Appendix A, will apply with ¾ point for first place. One race
shall be completed to constitute the series. No race score will
be excluded for the series score (Changes RRS A2). Combined
corrected times will be used to break series ties.
23. Prizes: Albert Trowbridge Trophy will be awarded for
first place in Class A and the Herman W. Friend Trophy for first
place in Class B. For each class, keeper trophies for the first
place in each race and the first and second place for the
combined races will be presented after the series. Third place
trophies will also be awarded for any class with ten or more
entries.
24. Social Activities: The BYC Gazebo, Yardarm and Main
Lounge will be open after the race, offering BYC’s hospitality
to all Captains their crew and guests. BYC’s acclaimed chowder
and hot dogs will be served. The Yardarm facilities (bathrooms,
showers, changing areas) are available to all participating
sailors prior to boarding their boats and after the race.
