Predicted Log Contests
Power boat skippers should plan now
to join in the BYC Predicted Log Contest
for the 2006 season.
What is a Predicted Log contest?
A predicted log is a skill contest, not a
race. You are competing with your own abilities to drive your
boat. It will improve your boating skills and you may find new
friends and have a "fun" experience.
Contestants are given a predetermined
course of about 20 nautical miles.
Contestants predict how long it will take
to run each leg of the course at a given throttle setting.
Run the course using only a compass and
tachometer or throttle setting, while an observer records the
time for each leg.
A minimum of preparation is needed.
The winner is the skipper who comes the
closest to his or her predicted time.
The Pilot, Collins and Frank P. Duffy
Perpetual Trophies will be awarded, and individual trophies will
be given for the individual contests.
For more information call George Lail at
(781) 631-5229, Don Humphrey at (781) 631-2276 or Art Capstaff
at (781) 639-0718.
Plan ahead. Put this on your 2006 summer
boating schedule now.
Note: Marblehead predicted log races are
run by the Marblehead Predicted Log Association (MPLA). MPLA is
made up of volunteers from all three major Marblehead yacht
clubs. Contests are open to members and non-members alike.
Predicted Log contests provide a "racing" challenge for power
boaters, although they are technically not races but contests of
accuracy and precision. The only restrictions are that boats
must have a minimum of 19' LOA and that skippers may ONLY use
their tachometer and compass for instrumentation. There is a
small entry fee for each contest or skippers may pay a season
fee for all six contests. Fee details will be published shortly.
