Junior Sailing Program                                Registation & Fees

Our sailing program provides 1 instructor for evey 5 students to ensure your child's safety and personal attention. The program is designed to teach students to sail in a safe, fun, and noncompetitive environment, building their confidence so that they feel comfortable and secure on the water.

The Junior Sailing Program teaches participants to sail using Sonars and Vanguard prams.

Each course lasts for three weeks and is run Monday through Thursday each week.  We offer either morning (8:30-12:00) or afternoon (1:00-4:30). See schedule for more details.

We also offer private lessons for groups or individuals. Typically on a Friday or on the weekend by arrangement with the instructors. To make arrangements contact instructors at instructors AT bostonyachtclub.net.

Sonar Program

The sonar program is run with up to 5 students per boat.  They learn to sail while building friendships with their fellow crew members.  The advantage of the Sonar is that the instructor can be in the boat with the students.

Sailing Camp: Age 6-8. Introduce your kids to the water, in a safe & enjoyable way.  The emphasis is on filling their day with great activities that are based around sailing and the water. Great for kids that are too young for the Opti program, or those who want to build their confidence before joining the Opti program.

Beginner: Age 9 and up. No prior experience required.  The course covers basic familiarity with sailing terms and boat handling required for intermediate class.

Intermediate: Age 10 and up. Completion of beginner or learn to sail class or the equivalent required for admission. Class focuses on creating competent, confident keel boat sailors using full main and jib.

Advanced: Age 11 and up. This class is designed for the advanced junior sailor who wishes to take his/her capabilities to the highest level.  Spinnaker work can be introduced if conditions allow.

Opti Program

The Optimist program is run with 4 students per instructor; each student has their own boat. Emphasis is on safety and fun!  The program mixes a “learn to sail” curriculum with other activities to help build the connection between sailing and fun.

Beginner:  Age 8 and up. No prior experience required. The kids will learn basic familiarity with water safety, rigging, sailing terms, boat handling, and wind.

Intermediate: Age 8 and up. Completion of beginner or learn to sail class or the equivalent required for admission.  Class focuses on creating a competent, confident sailor who is able to safely navigate the harbor and surrounding areas.

If you have your own Opti and want to use it for the program we will have limited storage available on the dock.

Vanguard recommendations on the optimal crew weight for a pram as being 75lbs to 100lbs. The program will follow these recommendations by placing limitations on Opti participation based on size and weight. Placement into the Sonar program may be recommended.
